I have been in the position of General Counsel of LiMo for just over one month today and I am starting to feel like my impressions are no longer “first impressions” but still new! I pulled up some notes on my impressions in my first weeks. I remember thinking it felt like an organisation with clever, committed people. I also have "lean" written in my notes. Like many organisations today, there is more work to do than people to do it, but in LiMo spirits appear high and somehow people seem to get more done than seems possible to complete in a day. I will certainly need to be running to keep up! I also noticed that meetings here take place at the strangest times –like 11pm at night or 6 am in the morning. I understand that this is a result of having members all over the world and trying to accommodate all of the different time zones. This is truly the meaning and reality of being “always on”.
In early November (week one), I spent Friday in the LiMo office on Hammersmith Road in London meeting colleagues, getting briefed and gearing up for the long journey to Korea where we were to meet the Members of LiMo for the quarterly meeting. It was not my first trip to Korea, as I had been there several times in the past. I had enjoyed Korea on my previous trips as I had all of the Asian countries I have visited but I had not been in several years and I was curious to see if I would like it as much as I had previously. Korea did not let me down on this trip. There is a certain "vibe" in every country. I like the combination of "old" and "new" that one feels so clearly in Korea. The cool, chic and stylish youth sitting next to their wisened parents and grandparents. The old architecture next to the modern new buildings! Smatterings of Military presence making one aware that a neighbour with different ideals lies next door. The Korean Special Interest Group KLEA (Korean Limo Ecosystem Association) being established warranted a ceremony and was an exciting event to attend during the trip. The ceremony provided the LiMo group the benefit of being able to go to the Yeong Bin Gwan building, a famous building that was previously reserved for official functions. At the dinner held afterwards, I was able to meet members of KLEA and other LiMo Members and share conversation, discuss views and get initial impressions on what their expectations were for their organizations and for LiMo over the next year. I hope to continue these conversations over the next months and leading up to MWC in Barcelona in February next year.
