These days, it's difficult to build any kind of large-scale software platform without standing on the shoulders of giants by using open source components. Indeed, in 2007 Gartner said that open source is impossible to avoid, and in 2008 Gartner reported that 85% of companies they surveyed had adopted open source with the remaining 15% planning to do so within 12 months. In my previous post about LiMo and the Open Source community, I outlined how we've been using Black Duck's Protex to help us scan our source code and identify the provenance of the many packages it includes. This scanning is now complete and we’ve fully assessed the areas within the LiMo platform with open source lineage. What does this mean for LiMo moving forward? It means that the approach described within our Open Source Policy adopted in May 2008 can now be advanced further to encompass greater dialog with the open source community with a view to fostering beneficial collaboration between our members and the community. Kicking off the process in earnest next week I'll be at the Gran Canaria Desktop Summit, talking to the smart developers behind the GNOME and KDE projects, and working with colleagues from ACCESS and Samsung to continue the dialog. If you're a developer there, come and say hi - we've got lots to talk about. I'll be reporting throughout the week on what's going on and what's interesting. More soon .... |
